Eric's dad celebrated his 60th birthday in March and at first we were unsure what to get someone who has everything and wants nothing and lives halfway around the world. We knew they were coming shortly after his birthday and wanted to do an "experience" birthday gift. So, we took Eric's parents to go whale watching. I wasn't feeling well and knew that sea sickness would be the last thing that I'd want to add to my morning sickness, so I didn't go. But Eric, his parents and the kids went on the excursion. And they saw a bunch of whales, dolphins, etc!! I was so jealous. But Lillie threw up on the boat, so I knew for sure I would have been done for, had I gone, so it was all for the best. Eric was on camera duty and he only took photos of the whales, no videos and only took videos of family on the boat and no pictures. Oh well. There were so many whale photos, but here's three:

Wall Beach with Grandparents
I really love this photo of my in-laws. They are so wonderful.
Henry finally caught on to the concept on the last photo. Haha, it makes me laugh every time I see it. This is our favorite beach around here. It's usually a windy beach, but the rock cliffs are so cool and gorgeous. I am not in these photos, because I was down the beach, close to where the car was, bundled up and miserable. I hate being sick. But it was fun for me to see all these photos afterward.

Long Time No Blog
Well, after a month and a half away, I thought it was time for an update. It's been a crazy couple of months for us, we've just been trying to survive, holding on for dear life. And there's only one thing that can cause that: pregnancy. I'm 12 weeks now and still doing in the constant nausea and exhaustion and occasional barf fest thang. But things have improved slightly and last week we finally got to the doctor and got to see the baby on an ultrasound, so my attitude has changed from "what in the world was I thinking doing this again" to "okay well, we're doing this". Can't say we're really to the excitement phase, but that's on par for me, it'll come. My due date is Nov. 7th, but the doc said he'd induce me on my 30th birthday, the 2nd, if I wanted. I cannot think of a better present for my birthday, but I'm not sure if it'll be best long term. Thankfully I've got some time to figure it out.
Pregnancy is hard. Hard on me and hard on my kids and husband. My poor family. The house has usually been a mess, I can't stand the smell of the kitchen even when clean (like I have to hold my breath to walk by), and I'm sure Eric feels like he's walking around in a mine field trying to navigate my moods. He's in charge of dinner every night and I have to eat like right at 5, so as soon as he gets home from work, he gets started on the second shift, cooking and getting the kids in bed every night. Even if I do feel okay during the day, by the afternoon I am feeling terrible and that usually lasts until I go to sleep.
So we're ALL excited for this phase to pass. I am hoping we'll only have about 4-6 weeks left before the nausea subsides. I dream of the day where I can take my kids on a walk, where I can go run errands, and sit through 3 hours of church. Such simple things that I used to take for granted. I spend almost all of my time laying in bed or sitting on the couch. Standing makes the nausea worse, so I am down and bored, a lot. Wow, such a downer post, I knew it would be, which is why I haven't written in weeks, but I just want to record this to show my child someday when they are being a difficult teenager. Look what I went through for you!
Since I last wrote, we had a week at the end of March where Eric's parents were here. We got to do some fun things like go to the beach a couple times, whale watching, hang out in Solvang, visit the Red Barn, etc. It was really nice having them here, cooking and cleaning and entertaining the kids. I feel bad that I wasn't a very exciting or helpful host. My kids are still talking about their grandpa who fought a bear.
The same day that my in-laws headed to Las Vegas, my mom and sister showed up to drive us up to WA to spend a couple weeks including spring break. The weather was terrible while we were there, but we did get to swim in an indoor waterpark, spend lots of tokens at chuck e. cheese and play with cousins every day. But I feel bad that I wasn't more fun to be around or more of a help to my mom. The last couple of days were plagued with the stomach flu and I didn't get it until the night before our long drive back. Morning sickness and the stomach flu are a bad combination. I only made it back to CA because of a blessing my dad gave me before I left, I am sure of it. It was rough, barfing in fast food bags along the way, and Eric had to drive the entire time.
Eric sold both of our cars while we were in WA and we swallowed our pride and bought a new minivan so that we can fit all the carseats in that we will need this fall. And he just barely bought an old camry for our second vehicle so I am finally have something to drive, if only I felt well enough to do so.
And as a folllow up to my last post, Lillie and Henry have gotten over their sleeping difficulties, which is great. It's nice that we don't all dread bedtime any more. That's it for us!

Adventures in Parenting: Sleep Issues
We've had a crazy month here at our house. It all started a couple weeks ago when I awoke in the middle of the night to Lillie silently hovering over me. It was slightly scary, I must admit. She said that she was scared and that she couldn't go back to sleep. In my half awake state, I told her to get her blanket and sleep on the floor beside my bed. Well, she laid down and tossed and turned for a good hour, keeping me up in the process before finally falling asleep. We talked to her that day about how there was nothing to be afraid of and that all she needed to do was pray and then go back to sleep. That next night she didn't come in, and the next morning she said that she'd woken up and said a prayer and was able to go back to sleep. So, I thought that our problem was solved.
The following night I woke up to a hovering body and she asked if she could sleep on the floor again. Eric woke up this time and told her that she had to sleep in her bed. So he took her to her bed, said a prayer with her, and came back to our room. Well, we were almost asleep when we hear loud crying coming from her room (she shares the room with Henry, they sleep in bunk beds where she sleeps on the top). Eric went into her room again and told her to turn on a little led light and read books until she got tired and came back to bed. A few minutes went by before we hear loud crying again. By this time we were frustrated and just didn't want her to make it a habit of going into our room and so Eric went to tell her to go downstairs and watch 1 show and then go to bed. Well she goes down and turns on a cartoon but the volume is REALLY LOUD, so loud that it wakes up Henry and he starts heading downstairs to watch TV (that's what they do in the morning, so I think he thought it must be morning). So we head down and turn off their show and force them back into bed, which after a few minutes of crying and me laying by their beds, they both dozed off. That day we were all grumpy because we didn't get enough sleep. I told Lillie that she wasn't allowed to watch any TV or play any games on the Ipad for the night's shenanigans. That day I also found out that Lillie was scared because she was hearing noises that she thought were wild animals trying to get into our house (Eric used to watch the Turtle Man show where a man would capture wild animals that had gotten into houses and release them in the wild so that they wouldn't get killed, but I guess she shouldn't have been watching it). So we talked her through that fear and thought that we had gotten to the root of the problem and that all would be ok now.
But she still woke up the next night and so we decided to move her bed into the play room so that when she woke up at night she could turn on the light and read books and cry if she wanted to, with out waking up her brother. We told her she could do anything in that room, but couldn't leave it and couldn't wake up anyone else. She stayed in her room that night and read books for a while during the middle of the night. She spent about 5 nights in the playroom. We'd find her asleep with her light on and books on her bed when we went upstairs to sleep. She stayed in her room all five of those nights, although she did say that she woke up every one of those nights. And going to bed was never easy, one night we found Lillie downstair on a chair sleeping after we put her to bed, another night she and Henry came down freaking out because the air from the vent was too hot, etc.
Her bed was taking up most of the floor space in the playroom and so I was anxious to get her back in her room. She didn't want to sleep on the top bunk anymore and she refused to sleep in the same bed as her brother, so our compromise was to take the bunk bed apart and put the beds side by side. So far (2 nights) this has worked although she still won't go to bed without getting out at least once.
I hate that we now have to have the hall light on all night in addition to the dream light that they use when going to bed. But I feel that I have to pick my battles. We went 5 years with Lillie only sleeping in our bed a couple of times as an infant, but now we're having all these struggles and Henry is being influenced and is now afraid of the dark and everything else.
I know that I did this to my parents all the time. I hated sleeping. I dreaded night time. I had irrational fears that if I woke up during the night that I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep and would be up for hours and hours all by myself in the dark. I remember whispering "Mom" through my parents door to try and get the chance to sleep on the floor of their room, but most of the time I was told to go back to my bed. I remember doing this a lot and crying a lot. Ugh, my poor parents.
So, we'll see where this goes, but I just thought it was something that I should probably journal.

MLK Jr. Day
The hottest day in January also happened to be a holiday and so we were able to spend the day with Eric and friends at Pismo Beach! With a stop at the Pismo Beach Butterfly Preserve beforehand. The weather was amazing and the company was superb! We are so grateful for our friends. Keep an eye out for a picture of Eric with a crab pinching his finger. It left his finger tip without feeling for hours. Ha!

The Last Two Days
Sunday we went to church, hung out, Eric made pot roast, and then we went on a walk to the top of Muffin Top to get out of the house. We took an unfamiliar trail to the top of the hill, and it ended up being really sandy and require more than one person to push our jogging stroller to the top. Oops. Monday was their last day, our final fun activity was breakfast at McDonalds and letting the kids play in the play place. They headed back to Los Angeles to catch their flight after that. We had such a great time, I'm so glad they came, even if their flights were less than ideal. They had a cancellation on the way here and flight delays both ways. Ugh. We spent the rest of Monday after they left moping around. The kids were unhappy and emotional and I know it was because they missed their grandparents.
Waller Park and Bowling
Saturday was a busy day too. The morning was filled with a RS activity, 5K run and brunch that I was in charge of, so my mom stayed home with the kids while the men went to the shooting range on base. After we all met back up, we tried to go to the beach, but it was foggy and really windy (BOO), so we regrouped headed up to Waller Park for fun and lunch. The weather was much better there, a little windy but at least it was sunny. Waller is a local park that has ducks and goose and after feeding them and eating our own lunch, we headed over to the pony rides. $3.50 for a half hour ride. Seriously, the kids finally asked to get off, they just let them go round and round. Definitely got our money's worth out of it. That evening, we spent time at the bowling alley on base. I bowled terribly, even with the bumpers up, but the kids LOVED it and it was fun.
